Predminulý čas priebehový korešponduje s predprítomným časom priebehovým, ale s tým rozdielom, že sa odvoláva na čas, ktorý je skôr ako 'pred terajškom'. Tak, ako pri predprítomnom čase priebehovom, nás viac zaujíma proces.

Tento tvar sa tiež používa v nepriamej reči. Je ekvivalentom minulého času priebehového a predprítomného času priebehového v priamej reči:
- Jane said, "I have been gardening all afternoon." = Jane said she had been gardening all afternoon.
- When the police questioned him, John said, "I was working late in the office that night." = When the police questioned him, John told them he had been working late in the office that night.

Predminulý čas priebehový sa skladá z dvoch častí - sloveso 'to be' (=had been) v predminulom čase + prítomné príčastie (základ+ing).
